Happily, on my 4th visit to Costa Rica, I rented a cabin for 2 weeks at "Alebrijes", Lake Arenal. I already knew this was my favorite part of my favorite place on Earth. But little did I know that I would fall in love with an entire family, buy a lot from them, and eventually live here fulltime! That was in May, 2008. Now I have given the go-ahead on building a small home there for myself, and the occasional guest. I hope to be living there by late in 2009. I have been drawn to this country over and over since my first visit in 1992. And the Lago Arenal area had quickly become a favorite. I have long dreamed of living in "paraiso", as I have come to think of it. And now my dream will come true.

My original stay at "Alebrijes" cabinas was great, as was my second time there in November of 2008. It's a beautiful place, with a wonderful family that owns and manages it, amazing people, astonishing service, and lifelong friends!!! Pura vida!!!!!!

We were vacationing in Costa Rica (for the first time!) and stopped into a real estate office just to see what properties were like and how much they cost. Rene Ruiz was so helpful and offered to take us on a short tour of the area. To make a long story short we bought the third house we saw! We have never been happier and have never felt anything but joy in our decision.

There are many reasons for this feeling of contentment and comfort. First of all Rene is a fantastic person to work with. He is a good listener and took us to see the kind of properties we were interested in and could afford. He quickly put together a nice selection of properties and let us experience a range of possiblities. Secondly, Rene explained things clearly. There are many steps to buying property anywhere and there may be added steps in buying property in a foreign country. Rene explained what we needed to do and introduced us to the people that could help us get the job done efficiantly and with a clear understanding about what was happening. In short, Rene offers peace of mind. We were able to enjoy the sensation of our dream coming true without worry about details.

Our dream of Costa Rica was to live here part-time. We have a house in California and wanted to spend the winter season there on beautiful Lake Arenal. What could have been a stressful situation of having a vacant house that might need repair and maintainance, with us thousands of miles away, turned out to be one of the best things about our relationship with Rene and his Company. His company is a family owned and operated business. Everyone at the office lives around the lake and they know the people there. They are able to offer a wonderful service that plans and coordinates home maintainance and repair, housekeeping, yard work and rental management. We have used all of these services and have been very pleased with all of the work. The services are provided by locals and we have been very happy with all of the prices, workmanship and timeliness. We are given all the information we need to make decisions and once a decision is made we are kept up to date about all facets of the project. We feel completely at ease in leaving the care of our home to Alebrijes Realty and Management.

My name is Carla Veltman. My husband is Eduardo Gomez and our darling dog is called Stella. We currently live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. We decided in late 2007 to travel to Costa Rica to discover for ourselves if everything we'd heard was true. We arrived in March and spent a month in Nosara. All three of us greatly enjoyed the beach. April found us in the Arenal area. We were fortunate that our travel agent found Villa Vagabundo for us and thus we met the Mora and Ruiz families. We fell in love with the Arenal area and asked Olman Mora to please show us around. We were curious to see what the area could offer us. We found Olman to be extremely professional while warm and friendly. He listened to our wants and needs and only showed us properties that fit within our requirements. To make a long story short, we are now the proud owners of a bit of Costa Rica. We bought a finca near Tierras Morenas and are more than pleased. We could not have done any of it without the help of the Moras and Ruizs. What could have been a bureaucratic nightmare was a breeze. We agreed to purchase the land on Saturday and Tuesday found us in the lawyers office signing the necessary papers. We also acquired a corporation at the same time. Laura Mora was very instrumental in helping us establish two bank accounts, one personal, and one for our new corporation. Margarita Mora is our treasurer. I'm writing this from Amsterdam. Unfortunately we had to leave the land of Pura Vida to close down our lives in Europe. In our absence, both the Mora and Ruiz families continue to represent us. They will be overseeing the building of our house, the digging of a well, ICE installations, the moving of poles, I could go on and on. Without them, we would have had numerous difficulties. With them at our side, I know with confidence that we while we end our lives in Europe, they are doing all that needs to be done to start our lives in the land of Pura Vida!

The two trips we made down to Costa Rica looking around were great; we luckily stop at the right real estate office where we met Rene Ruiz who was willing to show us around the whole area. Not knowing anything about the country we had lots of questions and needed lots of information which Rene always seamed to find for us.
The property we decided on La Cabanga was bought after we returned home, Rene lined us up with a lawyer and looked after the dealings informing us of what we had to do and who to get a hold of.
Being we are not quite ready to move Rene has made arrangements for the property to be looked after till we arrive which will be November 2008, hopefully. We feel we are really going to enjoy the country as it reminds us of our hilly country side where we live in Alberta.

We are happy to share our experience with you; this is how the process of buying land in Costa Rica began…Our search to buy property in Costa Rica started out very frustrating and intimidating. We searched hard and long on the west coast but the realtors were impersonal, the properties were expensive, the climate hot and dusty, and the roads were horrible. We headed to the lake Arenal region and when we came over the top ridge and saw the pristine lake, cool climate, beautiful mountains, and good roads, we new where we wanted to buy. Luck would have it that we pulled into Rene Ruiz office (Alebrijes Lake Arenal).
He quickly answered all 500 of our questions and showed us his listings in our price range. We looked at many properties and were not easy clients for Rene, but his calming nature and professional approach to the business saw us through the process. We bid on a house with car and cabin and he closed the deal for us. He found us a bilingual lawyer, introduced us to the bank personnel and acted as interpreter through the whole process. Costa Rica does not regulate the real estate business so anyone can and does sell real estate from the local farmer, expat, or the local bar tender. Rene taught us the difference between titled and untitled land and all the other requirements of our new purchase with the end result, getting us the proper government stamps and on the national registry. He knows all that is necessary to legally get the transaction done and does so in an efficient and professional manner. He is so concerned for his customers to have a total positive experience through it all. He also showed us the ins and outs of living in the region; from where to shop, what mechanic to use, etc, etc. The buying experience was so easy for us and less intimidating because of his hard work. When you buy from Rene you are not just another satisfied customer but become part of his extended family.
Now that my wife and I own a house, cabin, and car we chose Rene and Laura (Rene’s wife) to manage our holdings for us and how glad we are to have them. They work seven days a week and are always there to handle our questions or problems. They have gotten us the very best people to work on our house, cabin, and car. They negotiate the prices for any given contractor and always make sure we are not paying too much. They have found us good mechanics to fix the car, electricians, masonry workers, and even walked us through the local municipality offices to make sure our taxes were right. Without their guidance we would be lost since we only speak little Spanish. They make our stay in Costa Rica so much more enjoyable because they handle so much. We have witnessed Laura take on the government owned electric company for one of her clients which took many hours and trips to town to remedy their problem. There is nothing these two cannot do and nothing that they do not know about the region or Costa Rica as a whole. Having them as managers gives us great confidence that all will be taken care of no matter what problem arises. They welcome you into their family and it is a wonderful spot to be. They have great computer skills, language skills, and above all people skills. Rest assured they are the best in the area or anywhere for that matter.
Yours Truly, Danny M Ness and Rebecca M Ness.
